1915-1950: Aurial Joseph’s Story: Winnipeg-California

Here begins the mysterious story of Aurial Joseph Lipschitz, and his complicated departure from Winnipeg.

On 24 Aug 1915 Aurial Joseph Lipschitz crossed the US border to Pittsburg. On the elaborate crossing document, he refers to having been recently in Duluth. His address in Winnipeg is 654 Anderson. This looks like a routine business trip.

4 April 1916, “Alien Certificate”

On 4 April 1916, Aurial Joseph Lipshitz has crossed again into the United States. He was issued this “Alien Certificate” document.
“Anriel Joseph Lipshit, Nationality: Canadian, Age: 45, Birth Date: abt 1871.
Pre-Examination Date: 4 Apr 1916, Pre-Examination Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba”

What is Aurial up to? Where is he going? There are several puzzles on the above document. The information in the “Remarks” area is hard to make out. He seems to be using a neighbour back in Winnipeg as a reference. “Mrs Rochutz” at “652 Anderson Ave. Wpg” could mean that she was lived next door.

Note there is no mention of wife Helen or sons Solomon and Samuel.

This document is the first of a number of mysterious documents involving Aurial Joseph Lipschitz.

1 June 1916 Manitoba Census

Here is the straightforward Manitoba Census of 1 June 1916. The Lipschitz family in Winnipeg resided at 654 Anderson Ave, the house on the left in the modern photo. This address and 448 McKenzie St. Winnipeg are right beside each other, where Anderson Ave. and McKenzie St. meet.

The Lipschitz family looked liked a normal family: Joseph 46, Helen 43, Solomon 16, Samuel 6. Joseph’s occupation “Contractor-Builder”, Helen’s occupation “Grocer-Retail”. [The parents’ ages are two years younger than is correct.)

This all looks normal, so far. We are repeating this so you can compare what happens next.

Four years later, on 21 October 1920, Helen, age 50, and youngest son Samuel, age 10, leave Winnipeg. She cites 448 McKenzie St. Winnipeg as her last address. The nearest relative in the country she came from: “Husb. Joseph, Edmonton Alta.” Helen’s full story is told in another post. Basically, she goes where she said she would and stays there the rest of her life.

20 Feb 1922, Aurial’s mysterious landing document

Aurial was working in Edmonton Alta., or so Helen reported in 1920. If so, then from Edmonton he headed west to Vancouver.

Here is his 1922 landing document into the United States. There are a few puzzles in it.
* He has come down by ship from Vancouver to Seattle to San Francisco. Why?
* He states no previous address and no relative he was leaving behind.
* He has a large sum of money: $2500.
* Name of relative he is going to? NONE
* Town of birth: Tsirigev (not the usual Mglin). We have not yet found this town name on a map of the Mglin area of Russia.

This is the landing document of someone who does not want to leave a paper trail. He does not want anyone to find him.

27 June 1929, Aurial Joseph Lipschitz, Intention, US Citizenship

On 27 June 1929, Aurial Joseph Lipschitz declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States.

In this document, he refers to the mysterious Landing Document dated 20 Feb 1922, shown above. He also states that his wife is “Mollie” from Minsk, Russia.

14 June 1931, Aurial Joseph Lipschitz, Petition for US Citizenship

Here is the actual Petition, dated 14 June 1931 on the final Affadavits at the bottom. Mollie is now from Stubsk, not Minsk, in Russia.

He also adds that he would like his name changed to AURIAL “J” LIPSHITZ.

1 Apr 1930: the US Census for Aurial

From 1930 on, Aurial’s life and paper-work settles back to the understandable, with just a few age discrepancies.

The 1930 US Census for Los Angeles City, lists Aurial J. Lipshitz, age 59, and new wife Mollie, age 47, at 1027 West 85th Street. Aurial is a partner in “Furniture – Retail”. We would figure his age at 61 (if he was born 1869).

The 1940 Census for Los Angeles City lists Joseph A. Lipchitz, age 65, and Mollie, age 58, both from Russia. Their address is 1759 Silver Lake Blvd. Los Angeles. Neither list an occupation.

We have 1869 as Aurial Joseph’s birth. So that would make him 71 in 1940.

Three months after the death of Mollie, Aurial’s daughter Cecilia Moffat, age 53, came from Winnipeg to Los Angeles to visit. Cecilia states that she will remain for 3 months. We imagine this as a daughter-father reconciliation. Her father is now 76.

It is brave and kind of Cecilia to track down the father who ran away from home and family.
